New Zealand offers a wide range of skiing and snow boarding terrain. Coronet Peak in Queenstown with its light powder snow and ski everywhere terrain. Mt Ruapehu an active volcanoe with crater lake and some serious cliffs! The New Zealand snow season runs from June to October. All of the skiing is done up in the mountains which means that after skiing you can come down and have a game of golf or go for a jet boat ride! The Southern Lakes area offer five snow fields within two hours drive of Queenstown. Toss together some fantastic restaurants, just a few adventure alternatives and some spectacular scenery and you just about have a real alpine resort ........ oh for some serious altitidue and a telecabine. About two hours drive from Christchurch are Mt Hutt which is nearly always the first open and often the last closed and the Craigeburn Range. The adventurous should check out some of the smaller fields - Porters Heights, Craigeburn and Temple Basin to get going. Mt Ruapehu in central North Island with three seperate snow areas on one mountain....and it's a volcano. Whakapapa is without doubt the best ski field in New Zealand on its day. You got to luck out to get that day though:-) The first snow enthusiasts were farmers and their families. The lift was a converted tractor, much the same type that took Ed Hillary to the South Pole, and a long length of rope high in the mountains .... the nut cracker was born. Heck, they are still used on some of the club fields. Then of course Sir Harry Wigley of Mt Cook Airline fame ( now isn't it a shame we don't see the Mt Cook Lily logo anymore ) decided that he wanted to land his planes on snow. And so we have skiing or riding down the Tasman Glacier. Back country heli skiing or boarding, snow catting, hiking
